Deuteronomy Devotion: Moses not leading Israel into the Promised Land

It comes as a surprise and even a shock that Moses, the God-appointed prophet and leader of Israel, is refused entry into the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 3:23–27; 1:37).

From this, we learn that God takes disobedience to His will very seriously. Leaders have greater responsibilities than others and there comes with this greater accountability (see James 3:1; Hebrews 13:17). God may make an example of His leaders as a major warning and deterrent to all His people.

The Lord was angry with Moses and for this reason, Moses realised He would not listen to his pleadings to change His mind even just to go in and see the land. God was forthright and clear. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. “ (Deut 3:26)

God’s decision is final. Full stop. Finally, God very graciously allowed Moses to go to the top of Pisgah or Mt Nebo and view the land from a distance.

Understand that God will deal rightly and justly with any wilful disobedience. We reap what we sow. There are no excuses that God will accept. His will is always so clear. While God graciously forgives when there is genuine confession and repentance (1 John 1:9) there may still be a price to pay and consequences to be experienced.
