Wednesday Webwatch (5/5/21)

There are so, so many (and I mean sooooo many!) webpages, blog posts, and online articles written from a Christian perspective that we can oftentimes feel somewhat whelmed (or if you're like me, very overwhelmed) navigating the vast internet sea to find something helpful:

What is actually worth my time reading (other than the Bible of course)?

Is this author/website/organisation faithful to God's Word?

What might help me better understand this current issue in the world, or that sermon theme at church?

If any of these are questions you have asked (or have just been prompted to ask!), then you might appreciate a new weekly series on our website blog I have called 'Wednesday Webwatch'.

Starting from today, I will collate and curate a shortlist of links to various resources intended to inform and encourage your Christian worldview and walk. I will aim to limit these to topics that tie in with what we are learning and facing particularly as a church.

Check back each Wednesday for a new collection!

Here are some selected links to kick things off:

TAKE THE PLUNGE: Following our recent teaching on disciple-making, here is an encouragement to go deeper with our conversations. “We typically start in the shallow end with simple questions like ‘How are you?’ or ‘How has your week been?’. We gauge the ‘temperature’ of the other person and their response as we try to think of a follow-up question. The problem is, if you are anything like me, it’s amazing how easy it can be to keep conversations in the shallow end of life…weather, food, national news…but never end up getting to the deep end where true conversational refreshment occurs. It’s not because we don’t want it, we just aren’t sure how to get there.”

HONOUR YOUR MOTHER- THE PRACTICAL FROM THE BIBLICAL: As we come up to Mother's Day, Ian Carmichael offers us some Bible to consider. "Mother's Day matters threefold for me—I have a mother, my wife is a mother, and my daughter is also now a mother. So, better late than never, I thought I'd turn my mind to the Bible to see what it says about how I should relate to my mother"

‘WELCOME TO EXILE. IT’S GOING TO BE OK.’: As we approach our upcoming series on Ezekiel (and also for those doing Daniel in KYB), here's encouragement from Alistair Begg on living in this world at this time. “This world is not actually our home. We’re not supposed to settle down here. We’re not supposed to expect the church to be large, influential, and respected.”

AGING DOESN’T MAKE YOU FAITHFUL, JESUS DOES!: This is an important observation from Glenna Marshall for those who assume that greater age equals greater faithfulness. “It is folly to expect to wake up more faithful to Christ twenty years from now if we’re not feeding our faithfulness today with the means of grace God has ordained for our growth. God has invited us into the process of spiritual growth.”

9 PRACTICAL TIPS FOR BIBLE READING: You may benefit from George Sinclair’s simple but practical tips for reading the Bible. "You will never have enough time to read the Bible. If you wait until you have enough time to read the Bible, you will rarely read the Bible. The world, the flesh, and the devil will help fill your day".
